APPG for Transport Safety and the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group to discuss the government’s plans to reduce the drink drive limit

On 18th May 2026, we were pleased to hold a joint meeting with the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group to discuss the government’s plans to reduce the drink drive limit.

The discussion brought together Parliamentarians, academics, industry representatives, beer industry representatives and transport safety stakeholders to explore the recent government consultation on lowering the limit, the possible introduction of alcohol interlocks for repeat offenders, and the potential effects on the rural pub industry.

Evidence was presented on the need to reduce the current drink drive limit, alongside the importance of complementary measures such as stronger enforcement and alcohol interlocks to support meaningful changes in driver behaviour. Participants also discussed the ongoing decline of rural pubs and the need to consider wider impacts on communities and businesses.

The participants agreed that stronger enforcement of drink-driving limits, including through random breath tests, alongside a broader package of measures, would help tackle drink driving more effectively. The APPG looks forward to continuing discussions with stakeholders and representatives of the beer and pub sector as this work develops.
